Logic dictates that a politician should advocate following the law

There is opinion and there is logic. The two have nothing in common but are often transposed as a means of rationalizing decisions driven by an agenda and not the brain.

Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf created a stir the other day when she warned illegal aliens of an impending raid by US Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE).  She said she had a “moral obligation as mayor to give those families fair warning when that threat appears imminent.”

Her logic for aiding and abetting criminals was to “to keep families from being broken apart.”  Is that really a logical conclusion when faced with facts?  By her logic, all criminals should not go to jail so they can stay with their families.

What about the American families that may be destroyed if one of those criminals that got away ends up robbing or killing their family member?  Are those families able to be together?  Where is her allegiance to law abiding citizens?

I do not like or condone frivolous lawsuits, but I would favor any and all families who may be negatively affected by her actions to sue her.

According to Thomas Homan, the Director of ICE, the illegal immigrants targeted were those with convictions for assault and battery, crimes against children, weapons charges and DUI, among other offenses.

We are not talking about fine, upstanding citizens here.  We are not talking about the nice illegal immigrant who only wanted a better life for his family and felt there was no other choice but to break and enter into our country.  I understand that action but still do not excuse it.

We are talking about people who have already proven a propensity to break our laws – over and above entering our country illegally.

And that is where I do not understand the logic.  No one is saying we do not want immigrants in America.  We want them to enter the nation the way millions of others have done it….legally.

For Schaaf, a mayor sworn to defend her constituents, to ostensibly serve as a lookout for criminals is absurd.  Where is Congresswoman Maxine Waters on this issue?  She rants about wanting to impeach President Trump with the lamest of “high crimes and misdemeanors” but is silent when a mayor actually helps criminals continue to break our laws.

Homan said the Department of Justice is “reviewing” whether Schaaf broke any laws.  I hope they determine she did and arrest her.  She can then share a prison cell with one of her illegal immigrant friends so she can get to know them better.

Both parties are to blame for the inaction on this issue.  I get tired of the rhetoric about making America safer by keeping illegal immigrants out because it’s getting to be too much hype.  However, logic dictates that if you have less criminals in a country, the country will be safer.

Things will begin to change when we become intolerant of intolerance

As I approached the door I instinctively opened it and allowed the woman behind me to go first.  I was met with a death stare and admonished for implying she was too weak to hold her own door.  This was my freshman year in college back in 1981.

My intent was to be a gentleman but she perceived me as an oppressive male chauvinist pig.  It’s a naïve thought but for the better part of my life I have believed if you do the right things the right things will happen.  But as the years have passed, people being ungracious is becoming the rule and not the exception.

Tom Brady stomped off the field like a little brat without congratulating Nick Foles after the Super Bowl.  There is no excuse for being a poor sport and his decided lack of character says more about him than his football talent.

The hosts of a The View recently mocked Vice President Mike Pence for his religious views.  It appears tolerance to them means everyone must adopt their view.  The arrogance and hubris of the hosts is lost on them because, like most of the media elite, self-awareness is not their strong suit.

Andrew Pollack lost his daughter in the Marjory Stoneham Douglas High School massacre.  Before he learned her fate he was photographed frantically looking for his daughter. If ever a time called for compassion and empathy this was it.  Yet he was mercilessly mocked on Twitter because he was wearing a Trump T-shirt.

Some people suggested he was to blame because his vote for Trump paved the way for gun nuts to shoot up schools.  That’s sick logic.  Yet, these same people lecture the rest of us to be compassionate and understanding for everyone except Trump supporters.

Just last week, Lauren Duca, a columnist for Teen Vogue, made vile comments about the Rev. Billy Graham after news of his death was reported.  She called him “evil” and compared him to a piece of fecal matter apparently oblivious to how those two comparisons reflect more on her than him.

Her behavior epitomizes the dangerous path we are treading.  She is so consumed by her own agenda, her own worldview that she lost sight of common decency. What kind of person can act so despicable in one of the worst moments in a family’s life?

 

It’s hard to know how this lack of decency became so prevalent in our society. Back in 1981 it was harmless rudeness from a woman more focused on making a point than accepting a kindness.  Today, it’s an all-out war between people, races, political parties, nations, religions, and classes.

It seems people are no longer able to have a civil discourse on any topic.  If your opinion is different than the mainstream you are branded a racist, bigot, xenophobe, homophobe, or any whatever-phobe.  The vitriol has reached a fever pitch.

Those intolerant of another opinion do not care about doing the right thing.  They only care about doing the right thing for themselves and therein lies the problem.  It boils down to people only caring about themselves and not the greater good.

History is rife with examples of what happens when a population becomes decadent. Unfortunately, history tends to repeat itself because people never learn.  Or can they?  At some point we will become intolerant of intolerance.  When that happens depends on us.

Public Service is really private service for politicians

And the media and Liberals wonder why a large percentage of Americans do not trust them.  For more than a year we have been inundated with anti-Trump propaganda and when you sit back and look at the facts, it gets scary.

We are told that President Trump and his campaign colluded with the Russians to steal the election from Hillary Clinton.  Without any facts, the media and Liberals took the presumptive approach that the story was true.  We now know, there is a high probability the allegations are wrong.

It seems the FBI and DOJ purposely misled the FISA court by not revealing the main “evidence” used to secure the approval to surveil the Trump campaign was paid for and came from his political opponent.  Think about that for a minute.  If I’m a media person isn’t that the story and not some, pardon the pun, trumped up charges?

Even if the Trump campaign did collude with the Russians, the story is now so contaminated that any rational person will have reasonable doubt.  The media, blinded by hatred for President Trump jumped the gun and blew the story.  Liberals, unable to accept there are some in the country that do not think like them, ruined their chances of ever being believed or respected by cogent people when it comes to claims against President Trump.

In the media’s quest to prove President Trump’s use of “Fake News” is a dishonest portrayal of their craft, they proved him right.  In Liberals insatiable lust to prove President Trump is unfit for the presidency, they proved they are unfit for their seats.  How’s that for irony?

In my opinion, President Trump is not a likable person.  His bombastic nature mixed with thin skin makes his sideshow attention getting and entertaining but that is no way to lead a government.  However, I like his policies that are making a difference in our everyday life and agree with his tough stance on immigration.

With such a dichotomy, it is easy to be swayed for or against a president.  Despite my misgivings about the man I like what he is doing.  And watching the media and Liberals engage in a witch hunt against him makes me support him even more.  The media and Liberals have no one to blame but themselves.  And we all know a Liberal cannot accept blame but is adept at blaming others.

So, where do we go from here?  Not that anyone is asking me but I suggest Congress further investigate former President Obama’s DOJ.  I think the special prosecutor should close the Russian Collusion case and apologize to President Trump.  I hope the media goes back to objective reporting.  It’s the only way they can ever regain some semblance of credibility.  I think Liberals need to look in the mirror and have an honest conversation about being open to a different point of view and accept the differences in others.

At this point, you are no doubt snickering because you know what I know.  Nothing in that last paragraph will ever happen because the swamp that is Washington, DC is consumed by division, agendas, and gamesmanship and the game is to maintain power.

And all this time I thought those in public service were there to serve the public and not themselves.  Silly me!

The Media does not understand the difference between fault and responsibility

I liked it better when I considered news boring as a youngster.  At least it had the pretense of being objective. I’m not naïve enough to think the news was never about business.  It was a ratings game then and a click game now.

What came first?  The news turning to sensationalism to drive ratings or the viewer wanting sensationalism before we watch?

A bigger question is whether the pendulum will ever swing back.  At the very least I hope the news media regains that quaint notion of fact checking before publishing.

I liked it better when sports were about the games and scores and not political statements.  I guess that’s what happens when society neuters the idea of winning and losing.  In life, when someone or a team wins the other person or team loses.  The outcome of a competition does not create winners and losers.  I’m afraid only the behavior of the participants in the competition can do that.

When I was younger I enjoyed watching the Hollywood awards shows to get a glimpse of what my favorite actors actually were like.  I am no longer a fan of any awards show because of the hubris that emanates every time a celebrity opens his or her mouth.

According to published reports, the Grammy awards show this year was down 24 percent from 2017. It seems a considerable amount of people share my view about the awards shows. However, we’ll hear the ratings drop had more to do with the show airing in January versus February. In short, they’ll be tons of explanations and complete avoidance to the true facts.

Real people are fed up with the elites. We don’t want overpriced, egomaniacal self-absorbed miscreants speaking for us.  We prefer honest and fair dialog.

We each have our biases but the total disregard for fair and accurate reporting is getting absurd.  On both sides of the political spectrum.  I expect the Democrats to balk at the release of a declassified memo about purported surveillance abuses at the FBI.  These are the same people who delighted in the daily leaks about President Trump early in his term.

We accept our politicians to be two-faced, untrustworthy letches. I actually think those traits are in the job description.  What we do not expect is the people covering the inmates in the Capitol Asylum to take sides.

That’s where the news media goes off the rails.  They blame everyone but themselves.  To them, it’s President Trump’s fault for convincing Americans the media dishes fake news.  To normal people, it’s the media’s responsibility to figure out how to overcome fake news.  It’s easy. Deliver fair and objective news.

If you want the article to run, the coverage has to be a hit

Is it true?  Is it accurate?  Does it hurt an innocent person?  Those were the three tenets of whether to publish a news story way back when journalism was actually a noble profession.

Today the Litmus test appears to be: Is there some truth in it?  Can it sell?  Does it hurt President Trump?

We hear about Fake News all the time and, like everything in the media, the definition is fluid.  President Trump seems to use the term when he doesn’t like a story involving himself.  The media is trying to revise history (as usual) and claim Fake News means they made a simple mistake in fact checking.

As you might expect, both sides have their own agenda and the truth lies somewhere in the middle   Most of us define Fake News as the intentional misleading of the reader.  For example, Newsweek recently ran an article claiming Melania Trump ordered the removal of a 200 year-old tree from the White House grounds.

What the article did not include was the fact a tree specialist recommended the tree removal because it was in danger of falling.  That small detail changes the narrative.  Newsweek knew that fact but kept it out of the article.  They made a correction later in the day after a firestorm on social media forced their hand.

The mainstream media does this all the time.  The article was somewhat true.  The headline was click bait so it sold.  Plus, the article made the Trumps look bad.  This is the new world of media.  And the media does not realize, or want to admit, it is that behavior that is eroding its credibility.

According to the Washington Examiner, the Pew Research Center found the media’s coverage of President Trump has been more than three times more critical than the initial coverage of former President Barack Obama.  The Pew Research Center said the early coverage of Trump was 62 percent negative while Obama’s coverage was just 20 percent negative.

It also reported coverage of President Trump has been twice more negative than that of former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

“About six-in-ten stories on Trump’s early days in office had a negative assessment, about three times more than in early coverage for Obama and roughly twice that of Bush and Clinton. Coverage of Trump’s early time in office moved further away from a focus on the policy agenda and more toward character and leadership,” said Pew.

The media’s coverage of the tax plan is also another fine example of propagandist journalism.  If journalists took the time to actually read the bill and do the math, the stories would not have been so outlandishly apocalyptic.  Instead, they took talking points from their Liberal brethren and ran with it.

What will happen to the media’s credibility when a good portion of Americans actually benefit from the tax plan?  The same thing that is happening today because of its insatiable lust to damage President Trump.

The point the media constantly misses is people will compare their personal experience with the media’s coverage of topics and realize the divide between reality and Liberal fairy tales.

The biggest irony of all is if the media covered President Trump objectively, most readers would make up our minds about the man and, based on some of his actions, would have a negative view.  Instead, most of us doubt what the media is saying about him and root for him because of their coverage.  That headline is partly true, doesn’t sell, and doesn’t hurt Trump.

It does not meet two out of the three new tenets so it will end up in the slush file.

Media earned the the title of Fake News and must earn the trust back

I recently had the “pleasure” of attending a conference in Washington, DC on media relations and was surrounded by journalists.

Although the conference was meant to be instructional for people in business hoping to place stories in the media it quickly became an exercise in whining.  The topic of Fake News was a constant theme although it was never once mentioned on the agenda.  It seems the poor babies in the media are pitching a tantrum because no one believes them anymore and they were blaming everyone but the real culprits.

And, in typically Liberal media fashion, they tried to change the narrative to suit their agenda.  Suddenly, Fake News is no longer the intentional misinformation of a topic but positioned as “honest mistakes.”  To begin with, I am hard pressed to find anyone in the media that is honest.  It is even harder to find anyone in the media that will admit to a mistake.

Oh they’ll tell us there was an error that slipped by the “high standards” they set for themselves but no one will say “Yep, I blew that story.”  To be fair, I do not think most practitioners of Fake News purposely try to mislead the public.

No.  I think most Liberal media types are so eager to promote something bad about President Trump they do not fact check properly or spend the time doing their jobs…relating information the general public will fond of interest or needs to know.

A case in point is CNN which has no credibility with me.  Yesterday, CNN was focused on President Trump’s his soda drinking habits rather than on an attempted terrorist attack in New York City. Sodagate was meant to embarrass him, not inform the public.  Are we really better people knowing the man likes to drink Diet Coke throughout the day?

The issue the media continually misses is we want the news not be the witnesses to a witch hunt.  That’s why the media is losing credibility faster than plunging NFL TV ratings.

President Trump is no saint. At times, he’s a bully, jerk, pompous, and childish.  At other times he’s all those things at once.  But, then again, so are most of us.  He’s also focused, driven, dedicated to getting the job done, and true leader. However, the media goes out of its way to only focus on the bad and, if none exists, sensationalize a non-existent issue like soda consumption.

That is a good strategy to drive ratings among a certain sector of society but not so good at actually practicing the art of journalism.  At some point in the near future, the anti-Trump media outlets will realize the clientele they are attracting are not the “right demographic” for their advertisers.

You know what I didn’t hear throughout the conference? I didn’t hear anyone take ownership, responsibility or accountability for being a part of the problem.  The media is not the entire problem.  It takes two to Tango but it won’t even acknowledge it has a bias against anything or anyone that does not hold their viewpoint.

I have never met a less self-aware group than politicians and journalists. I have never met a group that steadfastly refuses to see its culpability in its demise.  The traditional media as we know it today will be gone tomorrow and as they write – 30 – at the end of their story, they’ll still be blaming others.

When perception meets reality it’s time to change the landscape

We no longer need President Donald Trump to drain the swamp.  It appears the swamp is draining itself.  And, as an added bonus, sanctimonious Hollywood stars and biased journalists are joining the spin around the drain.

The daily revelations of men in power exposed as sexual predators is reaching absurd levels.  It reminds me of the steroid era in Baseball where every Major Leaguer was guilty until proven innocent.  I still believe there needs to be credible proof before we destroy people’s lives and it needs to be more than a tearful recollection of something that happened decades in the past.

However, too many men are apologizing, being suspended, or fired for their disgusting behavior that we reached the point where men must prove their innocence rather than be presumed innocent.

That’s a dangerous place to be but apparently a well-deserved and earned burden.  It’s ironic that women are now emboldened to come forward under a Trump presidency when the scare tactics during the campaign and immediately after the election were the exact opposite.

It’s time to clean house and I for one am happy the politicians, journalists and Hollywood idiots are, if you pardon the phrase, bringing themselves down.

Personally, I don’t get it.  I do not see how a man gets his jollies parading naked or masturbating in front of a woman.  I do not get the excitement of sending a picture of my private part to a woman.  At what point does a man decide it’s a good idea to do that?  I do not know how grabbing a woman’s body part without her consent brings excitement or is considered acceptable.

Apparently, these politicians believe themselves to be untouchable but like to touch.

Perhaps they should try for a meaningful relationship with people other than themselves.  But these men are shallow.  They are egomaniacal and have no concept of what meaningful is and no idea of reality.  To them, it’s all about the perception of who they think they are instead of the pigs they truly are as humans.  They live on fooling their constituents and fans into believing that perception and the fools believe these miscreants to be real.

If the allegations are true, all the men guilty of such atrocities need to take up residence in that nice little place where they will be the ones molested.  Let them feel helpless like the women they abused felt.

The guilty must be accountable for their actions.  No free passes.  No looking the other way because the media likes the guy.  No wink, wink boys-will-be-boys defense.  If they did the crime, they must do the time.

What I find sickening is these jerks position themselves as advocates for women’s rights. The reason most “normal” people do not enter politics is because most of us have a sense of decency mixed with a modicum of morals.

No self-respecting man will stand up against the very thing he is guilty of doing.  But that is a way of life for those in politics, journalism and Hollywood.  They lived their perception for years; now comes the reality.

Time for comeuppance when discretion outweighs ambition

Physically walking the tightrope is a dangerous proposition.  Figuratively walking the tightrope in today’s politically correct society is stupid.  I’m about to be stupid..

Roy Moore is running for the senate seat in Alabama vacated by now Attorney General Jeff Sessions.  He is not a well-liked man by the Republican establishment or the Democrats because of his views.

He was leading in the polls and it seemed like he would become the next senator of Alabama.  And then women started coming out of the woodwork accusing him of sexual misconduct 40 years ago when they were teenagers.  He vehemently denies the allegations while they tearfully relay their stories.

The new monster of the day is a womanizing pedophile.  Granted both traits are abhorrent but I like the quaint idea of innocent until proven guilty.  And therein lies the problem with a she said/he said scenario.  The truth is almost impossible to decipher.

It is fair to be suspicious of the timing of the accusations with the special election for the senate seat on December 12. The Republican establishment is almost gleefully running to the microphones to say Moore should quit the race.  He should, if the allegations are true.

On the other hand, we have no reason to doubt his accusers.  Why would any woman put herself through the shame and pain of media coverage unless it were true?  But, then again, why wait 40 years when the man is 70 and running for office?  However, five women coming forward with almost the same story begins to look like a pattern.

Who do you believe?  Do not listen to what the media says about the issue because most liberals, I mean reporters, have are anti-conservative regardless of facts.  Do you think we’d get the same breathless coverage if the accused were Bill Clinton?

My initial knee jerk reaction is to think this is a classic “October Surprise” but I cannot dismiss a person coming forward with information unless there is a clear motive of a political agenda.  I can rationalize the timing as women driven by principle and feeling liberated after the Harvey Weinstein revelations. And yet, 40 years is a long time to wait for principle to kick in.

If the allegations are true, not enough bad things can happen to Moore to satisfy my sense of justice.  And, if the allegations are not true I have the same desire for the women who are soiling a man’s reputation for someone else’s political gain.  Hey, it’s only fair.

Every person that has ever been “forced” to comply to another person’s sick desires should have their day of triumph – providing their stories are true.

I put the word forced in quotes because every person has a choice.  I understand the feeling of helplessness and feeling pressured to comply – especially when ambition outweighs discretion.  However, we all have the ability to say no and walk away and say, “You know what; fame and power is not worth this price.”

Of course, this viewpoint does not pertain if a man overpowers a woman and her only way out is to comply to avoid further injuries or scars. But, we still have the choice to come forward the next day – not years later when an opportunity presents itself.

That leads to unnecessary suspicion and doubt on both sides.  The truth is none of knows the truth in this matter.  We do know politicians and the media are seizing this opportunity to drive their own agenda and we are the fools allowing it.

Where is the justice if Moore is innocent and loses?  Where is the justice if he is guilty and wins?  Where is the justice for these women if he us guilty but after their 15 minutes of fame nothing happens to him?

The problem I have is with the above questions.  Why are we asking about justice in terms of the effect on a senate seat?  Shouldn’t we be seeking justice in terms of the lives affected by this fiasco?

It’s time the NFL learns that every action has an opposite and equal reaction

The media considers it a political stunt when Vice President Mike Pence leaves a football game because he is offended by players disrespecting the flag. That same media does not consider football players taking a knee during the national anthem a political stunt.

The NFL considers players taking a knee during the national anthem freedom of speech.  That same NFL does not consider it free speech when football players want to honor the victims of 9-11 on their cleats.  It also fines players for wanting to honor fallen police officers with decals on the helmets.

The bogus reason the NFL cites about its stance on the cleats and helmets is a uniform rule in the players’ handbook.  That’s fair.  It’s also fair to cite the rule found on pages A62-63 of the league rulebook. It states:

The National Anthem must be played prior to every NFL game, and all players must be on the sideline for the National Anthem.  During the National Anthem, players on the field and bench area should stand at attention, face the flag, hold helmets in their left hand, and refrain from talking. The home team should ensure that the American flag is in good condition. It should be pointed out to players and coaches that we continue to be judged by the public in this area of respect for the flag and our country. Failure to be on the field by the start of the National Anthem may result in discipline, such as fines, suspensions, and/or the forfeiture of draft choice(s) for violations of the above, including first offenses.”

What the players and the front-running protesters do not comprehend is the players represent their team and the league.  That means they must abide by the rules set forth by their respective teams and league.  Since most teams are supporting the players and the league is supporting the teams it’s fair to presume the NFL and teams condone the actions.

If that is the case, then the NFL, teams, and players should be willing to accept any and all backlash their actions warrant from their fan base and sponsors.  It’s a simple accountability.

My youngest son goes to a Catholic school that has rules concerning hair length for boys.  He was told to cut his hair because it was too long.  He was not happy and wanted to protest.  We advised against it because we knew the rules when we decided to attend the school.  However, we will decline to support the school financially when they ask for future donations.

That is our recourse.  Likewise, the only recourse every football fan and sponsor has is to vote with their wallet.  I am not suggesting people partake in an organized boycott or we should use the wallet as a means to impose our will on others.  I am simply stating the obvious. Every action has an opposite and equal reaction.

Just ask Jemele Hill, the controversial ESPN anchor who was suspended for telling fans to boycott the Dallas Cowboys after owner Jerry Jones told players they would be benched if they didn’t stand for the national anthem. ESPN, however, did not discipline Hill a few weeks back when she called President Trump a white supremacist on Twitter.

Apparently, ESPN only takes action when ad dollars are at risk. It seems a number of companies that advertise with the Cowboys also advertise with ESPN.  Coincidence? Maybe. It appears organizations only pay attention to protests when it affects the bottom line.

When populism becomes control, democracy becomes socialism

The national anthem charade playing out on the countrywide theater is about anything but patriotism or the silly notion athletes are actually protesting inequality.

I call BS.

The NFL only cares about money.  President Trump only cares about President Trump.  The Left and Right only care about their positions and power.  None of these fools actually cares about what the flag stands for or the plight of those truly affected by racism.

Much like the statue stupidity or the neo Nazi’s right to assemble the hoopla is simply another case of both sides trying to control the other.

I have a hard time respecting anyone who does not honor our national anthem or flag and despise their actions.  At the same time, I have a harder time taking away a person’s freedom of speech or expression.  The NFL rulebook states all players must stand for the national anthem and technically the players are representing their teams when they put on the uniform.  The players are breaking the rules but much like a Society that selectively enforces its laws, the NFL picks and chooses what rules it wants to impose.

My bigger concern is President Trump’s rhetoric about firing those NFL players who kneel.  The conundrum I face is I agree with him but I’m not the president of the United States with 60 plus million ardent followers.  I will not and do not support anyone who does not stand for the national anthem.  That is my choice as a consumer.

However, to advocate – or try to bully – an organization to impose your will on their employees puts America on a dangerous path to socialism.  He is a populist president borne of the ineptness of the swamp dwellers.  The political elite is what created the void that President Trump fills.

A populist president with an ardent following is no different from a dictator with a strong military on his or her side.

As such, his followers believe he is on a mission from God (to borrow a phrase from the “Blues Brothers”).  And therein lies the fear.  President Trump is, was, and always will be an opportunist in my mind.  His followers still don’t get that small fact.  If he succeeds in turning the tide against the NFL and the league starts losing revenue it will cave in like all hollow walls when pushed.

Then what?  During “Statuegate” President Trump asked who would be next if the crowd succeeds in removing statues of Robert E. Lee?  I have the same question for him on this topic.  Who is next if President Trump and his legion of followers succeed in bullying the NFL to fire players for expressing an opinion?

The players and league can do what they want providing they are willing to accept the consequences of their actions.  President Trump can use the bully pulpit as he sees fit providing he would accept responsibility for the slippery slope he is putting us on.

Otherwise, it’s all noise.
